Initio Parfums Privés was founded in Paris in 2015 by Sébastien Ponson, who built the brand around a founding scientific thesis: that certain raw materials in fine fragrance have measurable psychological and physiological effects on human attraction — that fragrance can be a technology of desire as much as an aesthetic object. The brand name — Initio — references initiation into a deeper understanding of the self and the other. Ponson worked with leading psychologists, neurologists, and fragrance scientists to identify which raw materials produce consistent documented effects on perception, attraction, and mood, then commissioned compositions built structurally around those molecules. The approach was unusual in luxury niche perfumery, where most brand narratives focus on art and heritage rather than science.
Initio works with leading independent perfumers whose identity is disclosed — unusual in the niche industry. Oud for Greatness (2018) was created by Hamid Merati-Kashani — a master perfumer who studied under Jean-Paul Guerlain — using Himalayan oud, incense, ambergris, and musk in a composition of extraordinary authority. Side Effect (2016) — black vanilla, woody tobacco, and ambergris — was created to demonstrate the documented attraction effects of synthetic ambergris molecules (ambroxan) in combination with heliotropin. Atomic Rose (2017) — centifolia rose, patchouli, amber, and musks — uses Turkish rose at maximum concentration.
Oud for Greatness (2018) is Initio's most commercially and critically successful fragrance — a Himalayan oud-incense-ambergris composition that the fragrance community has embraced for its unusual authority and masculinity without aggression. The oud note (sourced from Bangladesh and India) is at genuine concentration, creating the first mainstream niche composition to use genuine oud as a primary structural note rather than an accent. Side Effect (2016) — black vanilla-tobacco-ambergris — is beloved for its warm, addictive character that demonstrates Initio's attraction-science philosophy in practice: ambroxan's documented skin-scent effects make it unusually intimate on skin. Atomic Rose is the house's finest feminine.
Initio occupies premium niche luxury — EDPs from €180-€270 for 100ml — positioned directly alongside MFK and Nishane in the accessible luxury niche tier. Their scientific framing — unusual, potentially gimmicky in less sophisticated execution — is backed by genuine compositional quality that would stand independently of the narrative.

Initio Parfums Prives — Common Questions
What is the concept behind Initio Parfums Privés?
Initio was founded in Paris in 2015 by Sébastien Ponson around a scientific thesis: that certain fragrance molecules have measurable psychological and physiological effects on human attraction. Working with psychologists and neurologists, Initio built compositions structurally around molecules documented to affect perception, attraction, and mood — notably ambroxan (skin-scent effect) and oud (dominance perception). The name 'Initio' references initiation into deeper self-understanding through fragrance science.
What is Oud for Greatness?
Oud for Greatness (2018), created by Hamid Merati-Kashani (who trained under Jean-Paul Guerlain), is Initio's most celebrated composition — a Himalayan oud-incense-ambergris masculine of extraordinary authority. It was one of the first mainstream niche compositions to use genuine oud as a primary structural note rather than an accent, creating a depth and authority that immediately attracted the fragrance community's attention. The composition's combination of Himalayan oud and ambergris is unusual in commercial niche perfumery for its simultaneous earthiness and luminosity.
What is Side Effect and what makes it unique?
Side Effect (2016) — black vanilla, woody tobacco, and ambergris over sandalwood and musks — is designed to demonstrate Initio's attraction-science philosophy in practice. Ambroxan (synthetic ambergris) at high concentration has documented skin-scent effects — it creates a proximity-dependent warmth that reads differently close to skin than at a distance. Side Effect uses this molecule deliberately and heavily, creating an unusually intimate fragrance that many wearers describe as making their skin smell irresistibly warm and personal rather than conventionally 'perfumed.'
How does Initio compare to By Kilian and Nishane at the premium niche tier?
All three occupy the premium niche tier at comparable price points. Initio is the most scientifically framed — its attraction-molecule philosophy gives compositions unusual intimacy (particularly Side Effect). By Kilian is the most concept-driven narratively — Kilian Hennessy's detailed briefs produce fragrances with strong story identity. Nishane is the most geographically distinctive — Istanbul's crossroads identity produces compositions genuinely unlike any European or Arabic house. Initio's Oud for Greatness is often cited as the finest accessible oud composition available below Amouage pricing.
Can I try Initio fragrances before buying?
Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Initio Parfums Privés samples and miniatures including Oud for Greatness, Side Effect, Atomic Rose, Rehab, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. Side Effect in particular is recommended to sample before purchase — its ambroxan-dominant intimate character performs very differently at skin proximity versus at a distance, and testing in your actual wearing environment (office, social settings, intimate contexts) will significantly inform whether its intimate projection style suits your lifestyle.
