Perfume Authenticity &
Batch Code Guide

How to read batch codes, spot counterfeits, and verify manufacture dates across 170+ luxury and niche fragrance brands.

✦  Batch Code Format Checker
The short 4–12 character code stamped on the box base or bottle crimp. Not the long EAN barcode number.
Format matches authentic batch codes
The structure of this code is consistent with genuine manufacturing batch codes. This is a positive indicator.

For the exact manufacture date and shelf life, verify on CheckFresh — the global batch code database used by fragrance enthusiasts worldwide.

Format does not match batch code standards
Authentic products use a specific batch code format. The code entered does not match this pattern. This could indicate a counterfeit product, a damaged code, or a data entry error.

Check the code carefully on your packaging, or verify directly on CheckFresh.

Please enter a complete batch code
Batch codes are typically 4–12 characters. Look for a short alphanumeric code stamped or laser-engraved on the base of the box or bottle crimp. Do not enter the long EAN barcode, volume markings, or concentration labels.

What is a batch code?
The manufacturer's fingerprint
Every authentic perfume carries a batch code — a short alphanumeric sequence applied during manufacturing that records the production batch, date, and factory. It appears as a stamped, printed, or laser-engraved code on the base of the box and sometimes on the bottle itself. It is distinct from the EAN barcode (the long number beneath the barcode lines).
Where to find it
On most brands: the bottom or back of the cardboard box. On some brands: stamped into the bottle crimp (the metal ring at the top). On spray bottles: sometimes laser-engraved on the base of the glass. It is always short — 4 to 12 characters — and never a long number sequence.
What it tells you
The batch code encodes the manufacture date. Tools like CheckFresh.com decode this date for 4,000+ brands, telling you when the perfume was produced and how long it remains at peak quality. Most fine fragrances are at their best within 3–5 years of manufacture.

5 signs of a counterfeit perfume
1. Price below the authentic floor
Every luxury brand has a global minimum price below which authentic products simply do not exist. A Tom Ford 4ml miniature cannot be genuine at ₹699. A Versace Eros 5ml cannot be real at ₹199. If the price is dramatically lower than the market average, trust your instinct.
2. No batch code, or batch code on box only
Authentic products have a batch code on both the box and the bottle (or crimp). If the code appears only on the box, or is absent entirely, treat it as a red flag. The code on the box and bottle should also match.
3. Loose or hand-applied cellophane
Authentic factory packaging uses machine-applied heat-seal cellophane that is taut, uniform, and shows clean fold lines. Counterfeits typically use hand-applied cellophane with adhesive at the seams, air bubbles, or loose wrapping.
4. Spelling errors and print quality on the box
Authentic luxury brands have zero tolerance for print errors. Examine the box under good light — genuine packaging has sharp, consistent fonts with no blurring, colour bleeding, or misalignment. Counterfeit boxes frequently have misspelled brand names, inconsistent font weights, faded or off-colour printing, and uneven gold foil stamping. Compare the font on your box against the brand's official website imagery.
5. Light-weight glass that feels hollow
Authentic perfume bottles — especially miniatures — are solid, dense glass with uniform thickness. Counterfeit glass feels noticeably light, sometimes shows visible mold seams or air bubbles inside the glass, and the cap may wobble rather than seat cleanly.
