About Jean-Paul Guerlain
Jean-Paul Guerlain is a French perfumer, born in 1937, and the grandson of Jacques Guerlain. He was the fourth generation of the family to compose for the house and its last family master perfumer. His first fragrance as in-house perfumer was Vétiver in 1959. From 1975 to 1989 he worked closely with Anne-Marie Saget. He remained in-house until his retirement in 2002.
His style relies on generous doses of natural materials and a classic top, heart and base structure. Sandalwood and vetiver bases recur, often with tonka bean, amber and Peru balsam. His masculines use carnation and cinnamon, while his feminines feature rose, jasmine and ylang-ylang. His best-known works include Vétiver (1959), Habit Rouge (1965), Chamade (1969), Nahéma (1979) and Samsara (1989).
Jean-Paul Guerlain created Guerlain Vétiver (1959), Habit Rouge (1965), Chamade (1969), Nahéma (1979), Jardins de Bagatelle (1983), Samsara (1989) and Héritage (1992), plus the first Aqua Allegoria scents in 1999.
