Kate Valentine Brosnahan was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1962 and founded her handbag company Kate Spade New York in 1993 with her then-boyfriend Andy Spade and business partner Elyce Arons. Starting with just six styles of handbags in a functional, architectural design that rejected the heavy logos of 1990s luxury for a more playful, colour-forward aesthetic, Kate Spade rapidly became the definitive American accessible luxury brand for young professional women. Her bags and accessories — recognisable by their clean lines, surprising colours, and witty embellishments — are found on the arms of millions of women across the world. Kate Spade passed away in June 2018; Tapestry Inc. (the parent company of Coach) had acquired the brand for $2.4 billion in 2017. The fragrance programme, in partnership with Coty, launched in 2009.
Kate Spade fragrances are created through Coty's working relationships with leading perfumers, with the brand's playful, colour-forward, optimistic aesthetic consistently informing the olfactive briefs. Kate Spade New York (2018), the house's flagship, was created using peony, daffodil, and gardenia over cedarwood — a bright, optimistic floral that directly translates the brand's colour-forward fashion identity into scent. Sparkling with Joy (2020) brought additional warmth with raspberry, violet, and sandalwood. In Full Bloom (2017) introduced a richer, more sophisticated floral direction.
Kate Spade New York (2018) is the house's most celebrated composition — a daffodil-peony-gardenia-cedar feminine of bright, optimistic character that perfectly captures the Kate Spade woman: creative, confident, and unapologetically colourful. The bottle, in Kate Spade's signature spotted pattern, is immediately recognisable and consistent with the brand's design identity. In Full Bloom (2017) provides a richer, more sophisticated floral alternative. Walk on Air, the house's first fragrance, established the playful, accessible character that all subsequent compositions have maintained.
Kate Spade occupies accessible luxury — EDPs from €55-€85 — with an American playful identity that distinguishes it from the more polished formality of European house fragrances at the same price point.

Kate Spade — Common Questions
Who was Kate Spade?
Kate Valentine Brosnahan founded Kate Spade New York in 1993 with Andy Spade and Elyce Arons, creating handbags defined by clean lines, surprising colours, and playful wit that became the definitive American accessible luxury brand for young professional women. Tapestry Inc. acquired the brand for $2.4 billion in 2017. Kate Spade passed away in June 2018. The brand continues with the same playful, colour-forward optimism she established.
What is Kate Spade New York fragrance?
Kate Spade New York (2018) is the house's flagship fragrance — a peony-daffodil-gardenia-cedarwood feminine of bright, optimistic character that perfectly captures the brand's colour-forward, playful identity. The spotted bottle is immediately recognisable as a Kate Spade product. It is the olfactive equivalent of a Kate Spade handbag: cheerful, well-made, and unapologetically joyful.
How does Kate Spade compare to Coach and Michael Kors?
All three are American accessible luxury brands at comparable price points. Michael Kors is the most glamorously jet-set; Coach is the most heritage-craft-conscious; Kate Spade is the most playfully optimistic. Kate Spade's colour-forward wit distinguishes it clearly from the more refined polish of Coach and the overt glamour of Kors. For buyers who want their fragrance to feel genuinely joyful rather than aspirationally sophisticated, Kate Spade is the strongest choice.
Are Kate Spade fragrances long-lasting?
Kate Spade fragrances are formulated for moderate longevity appropriate to their fresh, floral character — typically 5-8 hours on skin with light to moderate projection. The EDP concentration offers better staying power than their EDT formulations.
Can I try Kate Spade fragrances as samples?
Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Kate Spade samples and miniatures including Kate Spade New York, In Full Bloom, Sparkling with Joy, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide.
