Francisco Rabaneda Cuervo — who adopted the stage name Paco Rabanne — was born in San Sebastián, Spain in 1934 and trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He began his fashion career making costume jewellery for Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Dior before launching his own label in 1966 with a collection of twelve unwearable dresses made entirely of metal mesh and plastic — a provocation that established him as fashion's most radical futurist. His 1 Million bottle — a gold bar — and Lady Million's faceted diamond, are among the most iconic fragrance flacons in commercial perfumery. Rabanne died in February 2023; the house rebranded as simply 'Rabanne' that same year, though its fragrance legacy continues under both names.
The Paco Rabanne fragrance programme operates under Puig Group's direction with perfumers of considerable stature. 1 Million (2008) was created by Christophe Raynaud, Olivier Pescheux, and Michel Girard — a team approach that produced the house's most commercially successful fragrance. Olivier Polge (now Chanel's head perfumer) created Calandre in 1969, Paco Rabanne's first great fragrance — a cold, metallic floral reflecting the house's material obsessions. Nathalie Lorson created Olympéa (2015), the feminine counterpart to 1 Million.
1 Million (2008) is the house's defining commercial achievement — a bold amber-spice-woody composition with blood mandarin, rose, and leather over labdanum, amber, and patchouli. Within three years of launch, it became the world's second bestselling masculine. The gold bar bottle became as iconic as the fragrance. Lady Million (2010), its feminine counterpart (neroli, raspberry, jasmine, honey, patchouli, amber), reached similar commercial heights. Olympéa (2015), a white floral aquatic oriental, became one of the decade's most successful feminine launches. Phantom (2021), using a robotic skull bottle and cashmeran-lavender-woody composition, demonstrated the house's commitment to provocative design.
Paco Rabanne occupies accessible luxury — €70-€110 for mainline EDPs — directly comparable to D&G, Versace, and Boss. The house's unique strength is design provocation: no fragrance house invests as much in the flacon as both artwork and conversation piece.

Paco Rabanne — Common Questions
When was Paco Rabanne founded?
Francisco 'Paco' Rabanne Cuervo launched his fashion label in Paris in 1966 with his radical debut collection of twelve unwearable metal-mesh and plastic dresses — a provocation that established him as fashion's foremost futurist. Born in San Sebastián, Spain in 1934, Rabanne trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and began his career making jewellery for Balenciaga and Givenchy. He passed away in February 2023; the house rebranded as 'Rabanne' but fragrance heritage continues under both names.
What is Paco Rabanne's most famous fragrance?
1 Million (2008) is the house's commercial pinnacle — a bold amber-spice composition of blood mandarin, rose, spices, leather, amber, and patchouli, housed in a gold-bar bottle that became as iconic as the scent. Created by Christophe Raynaud, Olivier Pescheux, and Michel Girard, it became the world's second bestselling masculine within three years. Lady Million (neroli, jasmine, honey, patchouli) and Olympéa (white floral aquatic) are the bestselling feminine counterparts.
Who created Paco Rabanne's iconic fragrances?
Calandre (1969), the house's first major fragrance, was created by Olivier Polge (now Chanel's head perfumer) — a cold metallic floral reflecting Rabanne's material obsessions. 1 Million was created by a trio: Christophe Raynaud, Olivier Pescheux, and Michel Girard. Olympéa was created by Nathalie Lorson. Phantom (2021) was created by Anne Flipo and Dominique Ropion, combining cashmeran, lavender, and woody musks.
How does Paco Rabanne compare to Versace and Armani?
All three occupy the accessible luxury tier at comparable price points, but Paco Rabanne's unique strength is design provocation — the gold bar of 1 Million, the diamond facets of Lady Million, and the robot skull of Phantom have no equivalent in Versace or Armani's portfolio. In olfactive character, Versace tends toward Mediterranean freshness, Armani toward refinement, and Paco Rabanne toward bold, amber-spice maximalism.
Can I try Paco Rabanne fragrances as samples?
Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Paco Rabanne samples, miniatures, and tester bottles including 1 Million, Lady Million, Olympéa, Phantom, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. The 1 Million range in particular has multiple concentrations — EDP, Parfum, Elixir — each with meaningfully different character, making side-by-side sampling before purchase particularly valuable.
