Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in Paris in 1906 when Alfred Van Cleef married Estelle Arpels, daughter of a precious stones dealer, and together with her brother Charles Arpels opened their first boutique at 22 Place Vendôme — the most prestigious address in French luxury. The house became famous for creating the Mystery Setting (1933), a revolutionary technique that makes the mount invisible and the gemstones appear to float freely, and for their extraordinary figurative jewellery — fairies, ballet dancers, and woodland creatures set with precious stones that had never been used in jewellery before. Van Cleef & Arpels became the jeweller of Princess Grace of Monaco; their fragrance programme, launched in the 1970s, brings the same fairy-tale quality to scent. The Richemont Group acquired the house in 1999.
Van Cleef & Arpels fragrances are created in partnership with leading perfumers, with the house's visual language of enchantment, nature, and fairy tale consistently informing the olfactive briefs. Féerie (2008), created by Dominique Ropion, is the house's most celebrated feminine — a floral-woody of rose, peony, and sandalwood inspired by the house's iconic Fée Papillon (Butterfly Fairy) brooch. Oriens (2012), by Olivier Cresp, uses lotus, saffron, amber, and musk in a warmer oriental direction. Aqua Solis (2017), by Nathalie Lorson, introduces a lighter aquatic-floral register.
Féerie (2008) is Van Cleef & Arpels' most enchanting composition — a rose-peony-sandalwood feminine of luminous, fairy-tale femininity that perfectly translates the Fée Papillon brooch's delicate beauty into scent. The house's poetic visual identity — which has influenced fashion, perfume, and decorative arts across decades — gives their fragrances an unusual enchantment not found in more commercial jewellery house fragrances. Collection Extraordinaire, the house's exclusive range, provides deeper and more complex interpretations for the fragrance connoisseur.
Van Cleef & Arpels occupies premium luxury — EDPs from €100-€160, Collection Extraordinaire from €200-€300 — with a fairy-tale aesthetic and genuine jewellery heritage that distinguishes them from purely fashion-based houses at comparable prices.
Every Van Cleef & Arpels fragrance at The Scent Stories® is 100% authentic, factory-sealed and brand-packaged — sourced from authorised channels and shipped worldwide.
Van Cleef & Arpels — Common Questions
When was Van Cleef & Arpels founded?
Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in Paris in 1906 when Alfred Van Cleef married Estelle Arpels and opened their first boutique at 22 Place Vendôme with her brother Charles. The house became famous for the Mystery Setting (1933) — making jewel mounts invisible — and fairy-tale figurative jewellery worn by Princess Grace of Monaco. Richemont Group acquired the house in 1999. The fragrance programme launched in the 1970s brings the same fairy-tale enchantment to scent.
What is Féerie by Van Cleef & Arpels?
Féerie (2008), created by Dominique Ropion, is Van Cleef & Arpels' most celebrated fragrance — a luminous rose-peony-sandalwood composition inspired by the house's iconic Fée Papillon (Butterfly Fairy) brooch. Ropion's composition captures the fairy-tale lightness of the jewellery: delicate without being insubstantial, feminine without being sweet. It remains the house's finest olfactive expression of their enchantment aesthetic.
How does Van Cleef & Arpels compare to Cartier and Boucheron?
All three are prestigious Place Vendôme jewellery houses with significant fragrance programmes. Cartier has the broadest and most critically admired portfolio (Déclaration, La Panthère). Boucheron has deeper Paris couture heritage (founded 1858). Van Cleef & Arpels has the most distinctive fairy-tale aesthetic — their visual language of enchantment, nature, and poetry produces fragrances with a character uniquely their own. For romantic, luminous femininity, Van Cleef & Arpels' Féerie has no peer among Place Vendôme houses.
What is the Collection Extraordinaire?
Collection Extraordinaire is Van Cleef & Arpels' exclusive fragrance range — higher concentration, richer ingredients, and more complex compositions available only in their own boutiques. Inspired by specific jewellery pieces and travel destinations, they represent the house's perfumery at its most ambitious. Bois d'Iris, Oud Noir, and Rose Rouge are among the most critically admired entries.
Can I try Van Cleef & Arpels fragrances as samples?
Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Van Cleef & Arpels samples and miniatures including Féerie, Oriens, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide.
