Lancome

Lancôme was founded in Paris in 1935 by Armand Petitjean, a former executive at Coty, who chose the name from a ruined castle near his ancestral home in the Loir-et-Cher valley. His launch at the Brussels World Exhibition featured five fragrances simultaneously — an unprecedented statement of ambition — and a rose as the brand's symbol, establishing the floral identity that remains central 90 years later. L'Oréal Group acquired Lancôme in 1964 and has built it into the world's third-largest luxury beauty brand by revenue. The partnership with L'Oréal gave Lancôme access to the group's extraordinary research infrastructure while maintaining the Parisian luxury identity.

Lancôme's fragrance team has included some of perfumery's most celebrated names. Sophia Grojsman — responsible for Trésor, which remains one of the bestselling fragrances in history — created a rose-iris-white musk composition of extraordinary femininity in 1990. Dominique Ropion, working with Anne Flipo and Olivier Polge, created La Vie est Belle in 2012 — the house's most commercially successful fragrance and one of the most rapidly successful launches in the history of prestige perfumery, reaching global top-five status within a year. The house also created Miracle (2000) with Jean Guichard — a blend of lychee, magnolia, jasmine, and musk that captured early 2000s optimism.

La Vie est Belle (2012) is Lancôme's modern icon: an iris-gourmand of iris, patchouli, vanilla, praline, orange blossom, and jasmine created by Dominique Ropion, Anne Flipo, and Olivier Polge. Julia Roberts became the face, and the fragrance reached global bestseller status within months — one of the fastest commercial perfume launches in history. Its sequel La Vie est Belle en Rose (2021) and La Vie est Belle L'Éclat have extended the franchise into lighter, fresher territories. Trésor (1990) — Sophia Grojsman's rose-iris masterpiece — remains among the world's top-ten feminine bestsellers 35 years after launch. Idôle (2019), an iris-rose-musk by Domitille Michalon-Bertier, is the house's most recent critically successful launch.

Lancôme sits in premium accessible luxury — EDPs from €80-€140 — with brand recognition and quality that position it firmly beside Dior and YSL. Their customer is typically sophisticated but mainstream — someone who appreciates genuine French luxury without the obscurity of niche.
