The Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice is an Italian luxury niche fragrance house founded in Venice in 2010, drawing its name and inspiration from Shakespeare's play and the extraordinary role of Venice as a crossroads of Eastern and Western perfumery traditions from the 15th to 18th centuries. Historical Venice — the Serenissima — was the primary port through which Arabian spices, Indian resins, and Eastern aromatics entered European culture: it was through Venetian merchants that musk, oud, ambergris, and saffron first reached European perfumers. The house reconstructs and reimagines these historical fragrance formulas using contemporary perfumery techniques.

The Merchant of Venice works with Italian perfumers who research historical Venetian fragrance recipes from the Doge's archives and the Arsenal's historical documents. Black Oud (2013) — Venetian black oud, amber, and musks — is among the house's most celebrated orientals. Oriental Talc (2013), using iris, sandalwood, and musks, demonstrates the lighter, Italian-elegant side of the portfolio. Gold Collection and Museum Collection provide different tiers of accessibility and exclusivity.

Black Oud (2013) is the house's most discussed composition — a black oud interpretation that channels Venetian trading history through contemporary Italian niche sensibility. Museum Collection Murano Glass (2018) — using sea salt, marine accord, bergamot, and musk — captures the particular quality of light on the Venetian lagoon in one of the most evocative regional fragrances in contemporary niche. Rose Imperial (2015) demonstrates the house's Italian rose tradition.

The Merchant of Venice occupies premium accessible niche — EDPs from €140-€200 — with a genuinely unique geographic and historical proposition that no other house replicates: Venetian trading history as an olfactive framework.
