Kilian Hennessy was born in Paris in 1974 into one of the world's most famous luxury dynasties — his grandfather Richard Hennessy founded Hennessy cognac in 1765, and his father is Christoph Hennessy of the LVMH-associated family. He studied philosophy and journalism before an MBA at INSEAD, then spent eight years at LVMH working in fashion and fragrance — developing a deep understanding of luxury brand architecture — before founding By Kilian in 2007 at age 33. His founding thesis was that the fragrance industry was the only luxury category that had not yet been fundamentally disrupted by a customer-oriented creator who refused to compromise on quality, price, or concept. The refillable system — buy the bottle once, refill the inner cartridge perpetually — was both environmentally forward and economically radical in 2007, before sustainability became a luxury talking point.
By Kilian's creative approach is distinctive: Hennessy writes extremely detailed creative briefs for his compositions, working with leading independent perfumers to realise specific concepts rather than delegating the creative vision. Love, Don't Be Shy (2007) was created by Calice Becker — who also created J'adore for Dior — using neroli, orange blossom, rose, marshmallow, caramel, and musks to create an enveloping, intimate composition named for one of Hennessy's preferred attitudes toward love. Good Girl Gone Bad (2012), by Gilles Romey and Natalie Gracia-Cetto, uses jasmine, magnolia, rose, and incense. Forbidden Games (2012), by Mathilde Laurent (Cartier's perfumer), uses jasmine, rose, and bourbon vanilla.
Love, Don't Be Shy (2007) is By Kilian's most commercially celebrated fragrance — a marshmallow-rose-caramel composition of extraordinary warmth and intimacy that has achieved cult status in the fragrance community for its unabashed sweetness balanced by neroli and orange blossom precision. Good Girl Gone Bad (2012) — jasmine, magnolia, rose, incense — is the house's most critically admired composition for its complexity. Apple Brandy On the Rocks (2016) uses apple, cognac, and cinnamon — a tribute to Hennessy's cognac heritage. Vodka on the Rocks (2007) pioneered the 'frozen vodka' accord in fine fragrance.
By Kilian occupies ultra-luxury niche — €250-€400 for the refillable box and €100-€150 for refills — with a refillable system that makes it progressively more economical over time. The house's combination of genuine conceptual ambition, top-tier perfumers, and exceptional ingredient quality justifies the premium positioning.

By Kilian — Common Questions
Who is Kilian Hennessy and why did he found By Kilian?
Kilian Hennessy was born in Paris in 1974 into the Hennessy cognac dynasty — his grandfather founded Hennessy in 1765. After studying philosophy and working at LVMH for eight years, he founded By Kilian in 2007 at 33 with a thesis: the fragrance industry was the only luxury category not yet disrupted by a creator who refused to compromise on quality or concept. His refillable system — buy once, refill perpetually — was environmentally forward and economically radical seven years before sustainability became a luxury talking point.
What is Love, Don't Be Shy?
Love, Don't Be Shy (2007) was created by Calice Becker — also creator of Dior J'adore — using neroli, orange blossom, rose, marshmallow, caramel, and musks. The name reflects Kilian Hennessy's personal philosophy toward love. Its achievement is balancing unabashed sweetness (marshmallow, caramel) with the precision of neroli and rose to create warmth that feels intimate rather than cloying. It has achieved cult status in the global fragrance community for this balance and remains the house's most commercially beloved composition.
How does By Kilian's refillable system work?
By Kilian's fragrance comes in two components: the outer box (hand-crafted with magnetic clasp, black suede, gold embossing) and the inner spray bottle (which contains the fragrance). You purchase the full set initially; when the fragrance is finished, you purchase only the refill cartridge — at roughly 60-70% of the full-set price — and slide it into your existing box. Over several refills, the total cost per millilitre becomes progressively more competitive while the outer object improves in patina.
How does By Kilian compare to Frederic Malle and Serge Lutens in Parisian niche?
All three represent the intellectual summit of Parisian niche perfumery at comparable price points. Frederic Malle is the most focused on the perfumer as sole creative authority — each fragrance is credited to one artist. By Kilian is the most concept-driven — Hennessy's detailed briefs produce fragrances with strong narrative identity. Serge Lutens is the most personal — Lutens's own visual and artistic obsessions guide every composition. By Kilian is the most accessible of the three for first-time niche buyers due to Love, Don't Be Shy's immediate warmth.
Can I try By Kilian fragrances before buying?
Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic By Kilian samples and miniatures including Love Don't Be Shy, Good Girl Gone Bad, Forbidden Games, Apple Brandy On the Rocks, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. At the By Kilian price point (€250-€400 for the full set), sampling is essential — particularly Love, Don't Be Shy, whose marshmallow-caramel sweetness is intense on paper but settles beautifully on warm skin into something much more restrained.
