Jo Malone founded her fragrance business from her London kitchen in 1994, beginning by making bath oils and face creams for clients as a facialist before pivoting entirely to fragrance after discovering the transformative effect of scent on her clients. Working without any formal perfumery training, she developed the concept of Fragrance Combining — layering two or more colognes simultaneously to create a unique personal signature — which became the brand's most distinctive contribution to fragrance culture. Estée Lauder Companies acquired Jo Malone London in 1999 for a reported £40 million; Jo herself left the company in 2006. The brand has since expanded globally under the Estée Lauder umbrella while maintaining its British lifestyle identity. Jo Malone later founded Jo Loves in 2011 as her personal creative return to fragrance.
Jo Malone London fragrances are created by Christine Nagel — now also Hermès's head perfumer — and her successor Celine Roux, who became head of fragrance in 2015. Roux developed some of the brand's most critically acclaimed recent fragrances including the English Oak & Redcurrant and the Wild Bluebell series. Christine Nagel, before joining Hermès, contributed several fragrances to the collection's expansion in the early 2010s. The house's compositional style is characterised by clarity and restraint — individual ingredients or small accords presented without baroque complexity, allowing the layering philosophy room to operate.
Peony & Blush Suede is the house's bestselling Cologne — a luminous, romantic composition of peony, red apple, jasmine, rose, and suede that captures the optimism of an English garden in early summer. Lime Basil & Mandarin, the original hero launch, remains a bestseller 30 years on — a clean, culinary-fresh composition of lime zest, basil, and white thyme that essentially created the home-fragrance-meets-wearable-scent aesthetic the brand is synonymous with. Wood Sage & Sea Salt (2014) — created by Marie Salamagne and Christine Nagel — uses sea salt, ambrette seeds, and sage to evoke the British coastline in a composition that became one of the decade's most referenced naturalistic fragrances. Velvet Rose & Oud introduced the brand's only oud-forward composition, bridging British botanical with Middle Eastern richness.
Jo Malone London occupies premium accessible luxury — £££ to ££££ — typically £65-£150 for 100ml Cologne. Their strength is the layering system: a single Jo Malone Cologne is elegant; two combined is genuinely personal and distinctive in a way no other brand facilitates.
Every Jo Malone London fragrance at The Scent Stories® is 100% authentic, factory-sealed and brand-packaged — sourced from authorised channels and shipped worldwide.
Jo Malone London — Common Questions
Who is Jo Malone and when did she found the brand?
Jo Malone began making bath oils and face creams for clients from her London kitchen in 1994, working initially as a facialist who discovered scent's transformative effect. Without formal perfumery training, she developed the art of Fragrance Combining — layering multiple Colognes for a personal signature — which became the brand's most distinctive innovation. Estée Lauder acquired the brand in 1999; Jo left in 2006 and founded Jo Loves in 2011. She was awarded a CBE for services to the fragrance industry in 2018.
What is Fragrance Combining and how does it work?
Fragrance Combining — Jo Malone London's signature concept — is the practice of wearing two or more of their Colognes simultaneously on different areas of skin, or layering a Bath and Body product of one fragrance with a Cologne of another. The brand offers guided combining consultations in their stores. For example, Lime Basil & Mandarin worn on the wrist with Peony & Blush Suede at the neck creates a personal accord achievable no other way.
What are Jo Malone's most loved fragrances?
Peony & Blush Suede is the bestselling Cologne — a romantic garden composition of peony, red apple, jasmine, rose, and suede. Lime Basil & Mandarin, the original hero launch from 1994, remains iconic for its clean culinary freshness of lime zest, basil, and white thyme. Wood Sage & Sea Salt (2014), created by Marie Salamagne and Christine Nagel, is perhaps the most referenced naturalistic fragrance of the decade — a coastal composition of sea salt, ambrette, and sage.
How does Jo Malone compare to Diptyque and Byredo?
All three are premium lifestyle fragrance houses with a strong aesthetic identity beyond the fragrance itself. Jo Malone is the most approachable and British of the three — simpler compositions, lighter concentrations (Cologne strength rather than EDP), and more directly wearable. Diptyque is more complex and artistically adventurous; Byredo is more fashion-forward and Scandinavian in minimalism. Jo Malone's unique advantage is the Fragrance Combining system, which neither Diptyque nor Byredo replicates.
Can I try Jo Malone colognes before buying?
Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Jo Malone London samples and miniatures including Peony & Blush Suede, Lime Basil & Mandarin, Wood Sage & Sea Salt, English Pear & Freesia, Velvet Rose & Oud, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. Given the Fragrance Combining philosophy, sampling multiple colognes and experimenting with layering combinations before investing is exactly how the brand is intended to be discovered.
