Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent — known as Yves Saint Laurent — was born in Oran, Algeria in 1936 and arrived in Paris at seventeen with sketches that won him a job at Christian Dior. When Dior died suddenly in 1957, the twenty-one-year-old Saint Laurent was named creative director of the most prestigious house in the world. His own house, founded with partner Pierre Bergé in 1961 at 5 Avenue Marceau, went on to define the second half of the twentieth century in fashion — introducing the women's tuxedo (Le Smoking, 1966), the safari jacket (1968), and see-through blouses in ways that fused liberation with elegance. Saint Laurent was notoriously open about his struggles with depression and substance abuse; his fragrances — Opium most controversially — were inseparable from his personal mythology. The house is now owned by Kering and operates under the shortened brand name YSL Beauty for fragrance, managed by L'Oréal.
The YSL fragrance programme has attracted some of perfumery's finest talents across its sixty-year history. Opium (1977) was created by Jean Amic and Raymond Chaillan — a landmark oriental of spice, rose, jasmine, vetiver, patchouli, and amber that caused protests outside Bergdorf Goodman on its American launch. Sophia Grojsman — who also created Trésor and White Linen — worked on early feminine extensions of the house. Toward the modern era, Nathalie Lorson and Dominique Ropion contributed to various YSL entries. Black Opium (2014) was created by Marie Salamagne, Nathalie Lorson, Olivier Cresp, and Honorine Blanc — a committee effort that produced one of the decade's most commercially successful launches.
Black Opium EDP (2014), built on coffee, white flowers, vanilla, and patchouli over cedar and cashmere, became one of the fastest-selling fragrances of the 2010s — its darkness and addictive gourmand character perfectly timed for a generation raised on artisan coffee culture. Libre EDP (2019), created by Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm, uses lavender and orange blossom over musk and vanilla — pitched as a fragrance of freedom and worn by Dua Lipa, it immediately became YSL's flagship feminine. Mon Paris (2016), a fruity-floral of pear, raspberry, peony, rose, and white musk, became a global bestseller for its romantic, accessible character. For men, Y EDP and La Nuit de L'Homme represent YSL's most successful masculine entries.
YSL sits in premium accessible luxury — EDPs from €80-€130, with Libre and Black Opium typically commanding the upper range. Comparable to Dior and Armani in price and positioning, YSL differentiates through its cultural iconography — no other house has the same transgressive heritage at a mainstream price point.

Yves Saint Laurent — Common Questions
When was Yves Saint Laurent founded?
Yves Saint Laurent founded his house in 1961 at 5 Avenue Marceau in Paris with partner Pierre Bergé, having previously served as creative director of Christian Dior from 1957 following Monsieur Dior's death. YSL's tenure introduced the women's tuxedo (Le Smoking, 1966), the safari jacket (1968), and sheer blouses that redefined feminine dressing. The house is now owned by Kering, with YSL Beauty fragrances managed by L'Oréal.
What is YSL's most famous fragrance?
Opium (1977) is YSL's most historically significant fragrance — an orientale of spice, rose, jasmine, patchouli, and amber that caused protests on its American launch outside Bergdorf Goodman. Black Opium (2014), a modern gourmand oriental of coffee, white florals, and vanilla, became the decade's most commercially successful new launch. Libre (2019) with lavender and orange blossom over musk is YSL's current flagship feminine, worn by Dua Lipa.
Who created Black Opium?
Black Opium (2014) was created by a team of four perfumers: Marie Salamagne, Nathalie Lorson, Olivier Cresp, and Honorine Blanc. This collaborative approach produced one of the 2010s most commercially successful launches — a coffee-white floral-vanilla-patchouli composition that became an instant bestseller for its addictive, modern gourmand character. Libre was created by Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm.
How does YSL compare to Dior and Chanel in fragrance?
All three occupy comparable luxury price points, but YSL's cultural identity is the most transgressive of the three — Opium's provocative launch history and Black Opium's dark modernity have no equivalent in Dior or Chanel's portfolios. Dior is more refined and heritage-focused; Chanel more minimalist and ingredient-obsessed. YSL wins for cultural boldness; the other two for compositional depth and craft at the highest level.
Can I try YSL fragrances before buying a full bottle?
Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic YSL samples, miniatures, and tester bottles including Black Opium, Libre, Mon Paris, Y EDP, La Nuit de L'Homme, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. Black Opium in particular has multiple concentrations — EDP, Intense, Parfum, Elixir — each meaningfully different in character, making side-by-side sampling genuinely useful.
