About Maurice Roucel
Maurice Roucel is a French perfumer from Normandy. He started in 1973 as an analytical chemist at a Paris fashion house before training as a perfumer. He then spent 12 years at Quest International and joined Symrise in 1996. He won the Prix François Coty in 2002 and was made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2012. Symrise marked his 50 years in perfumery in 2025.
Symrise colleagues describe him as generous and rigorous, and he says a perfume must include affection. His best-known works include Hermès 24, Faubourg (1995), Frédéric Malle Musc Ravageur (2000) and L'Instant de Guerlain (2003). He also created DKNY Be Delicious (2004) and Lalique Pour Homme (1997). Initio Addictive Vibration (2016) is among his later niche credits.
