Matière Première was founded in Paris in 2019 by Aurélien Guichard — one of the most accomplished perfumers of his generation, responsible for compositions including Gucci's Mémoire d'une Odeur (with Alberto Morillas), Narciso Rodriguez All Of Me, and contributions to several Chanel and Hermès creations. His founding thesis was as its name suggests: to place the raw material — the ingredient itself — at the absolute centre of the fragrance proposition. Each Matière Première composition is built around a single exceptional raw material sourced with meticulous attention to origin, quality, and sustainability.

Guichard creates each composition himself, using the full depth of his industry experience to build architectural structures that showcase a single ingredient without simplifying it. Radical Rose (2020) — created around Rosa centifolia, the rose of Grasse — is among the most technically sophisticated rose compositions in contemporary niche perfumery, using a series of complementary materials to amplify the rose's depth rather than adding unrelated elements. Crystal Saffron (2020) explores saffron — one of perfumery's most expensive and challenging ingredients — with an unusual clarity. French Flower (2020), a jasmine absolute composition, demonstrates Guichard's ability to render a familiar ingredient with complete originality.
