Guerlain

Guerlain is the oldest surviving French perfume house, founded in Paris in 1828 by Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain, who opened his first boutique at 42 Rue de Rivoli selling perfumes, soaps, and beauty preparations. The house supplied perfume to Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, establishing a tradition of royal patronage that would continue for generations. What distinguishes Guerlain uniquely is their founding principle — only members of the Guerlain family may serve as master perfumer. This unbroken lineage of five generations of Guerlains has created a creative continuity unlike any other house in perfumery. Thierry Wasser joined as house perfumer in 2008, the first non-Guerlain family member to hold the role, trained and mentored by the legendary Jean-Paul Guerlain.

The Guerlain family's creative lineage spans almost two centuries of landmark compositions. Jacques Guerlain — who worked from 1894 to 1955 — created both Jicky (1889) and Shalimar (1925), two of the most historically significant fragrances ever made. Jean-Paul Guerlain, the fourth generation, created Habit Rouge (1965), Vetiver (1959), and Jardins de Bagatelle (1983). Thierry Wasser, the current master perfumer, created Mon Guerlain (2017) with Delphine Jelk — their most commercially successful recent feminine.

Jicky (1889) is considered by fragrance historians the world's first modern perfume — it broke entirely with the single-note flower extracts of its era, using synthetic musks and coumarin to create an abstract composition that smelled of nothing in nature. Shalimar (1925) — named after the Mughal gardens of Lahore — is Guerlain's most iconic fragrance and one of the bestselling orientals in history: bergamot, iris, rose, jasmine, civet, opopanax, vanilla, and incense in a composition of extraordinary depth. Mon Guerlain (2017), with lavender, bergamot, sandalwood, and vanilla, brought the house its most successful modern launch with Angelina Jolie as face. L'Heure Bleue (1912) and Mitsouko (1919) remain among the most admired compositions in classical perfumery.
