Azzaro

Loris Azzaro was born in Tunis in 1933 and established his Paris fashion boutique in the 1960s on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, attracting clients including Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, and Raquel Welch. He launched his fragrance programme in 1975 — before his fashion label's first major collection — believing fragrance could establish emotional brand identity more immediately than clothing. Azzaro died in 2003. The fragrance programme is now managed by Clarins Fragrance Group with consistent commercial success.

Azzaro Pour Homme (1978) was created by Gérard Anthony using aniseed, basil, lavender, oakmoss, patchouli, and vetiver — a bold fougère that became the definitive masculine of the late 1970s European disco era. Its anise-basil opening was unprecedented in commercial masculine fragrance: unusual enough to polarise on first encounter, complex enough to reward repeated wearing. Its sustained 45-year commercial performance reflects genuine quality — a composition that transcends the era that created it by virtue of its compositional integrity.

Chrome (1996), created by Jacques Chabert and Michel Almairac, is Azzaro's most commercially successful modern masculine — a fresh metallic aquatic of bergamot, water notes, rosewood, and warm amber that became one of the bestselling European masculines of the late 1990s and 2000s. Its metallic freshness occupies a similar register to Acqua di Giò but with a slightly warmer, more European character. Chrome has sold hundreds of millions of units and remains in continuous global production after nearly 30 years.

All three offer well-made European masculines at comparable accessible prices, but with distinct characters. Azzaro Pour Homme's anise-basil fougère is more classically European and artistically adventurous than anything in Boss or Lacoste's portfolio. Chrome's metallic freshness sits between Lacoste's sporty casual and Boss Bottled's warm executive refinement. Azzaro is the most interesting of the three for the fragrance enthusiast; Boss the most professionally versatile; Lacoste the most casually accessible.

Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Azzaro samples, miniatures, and tester bottles including Pour Homme, Chrome, Wanted, Chrome United, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. Sampling Pour Homme alongside Chrome provides an interesting study in two fundamentally different European masculine philosophies from the same house — the bold, anisic fougère of the 1970s versus the clean metallic aquatic of the 1990s — both of which have maintained commercial relevance across four decades.
