Alfred Dunhill founded his tobacco and accessories business in London in 1893, initially selling motoring accessories and tobacco products before expanding into leather goods and luxury lifestyle objects. The Dunhill man — who combined the pursuits of tobacco, motoring, and refined English living — became a cultural archetype of a certain kind of Edwardian British masculinity: knowledgeable, understated, and committed to quality over ostentation. Dunhill's Mayfair flagship on Jermyn Street, opened in 1907, remains one of London's great retail destinations. Fragrances entered the Dunhill portfolio in the 1970s and have since produced several enduring British masculines that carry the house's DNA of refined confidence.

Dunhill fragrances are created through a licensing partnership with Inter Parfums since 2017 (previously through P&G), working with leading perfumers to maintain the house's English character. Desire (2008) is an amber-oriental masculine that has become the house's most globally recognised fragrance — sandalwood, amber, musk, and tobacco creating a warm, sophisticated character. Driven (2019), created by Loc Dong, introduced a fresh aquatic-woody direction inspired by the connection between Dunhill and British motoring culture. Century (2017), by multiple perfumers working in collaboration, created the house's most conceptually ambitious fragrance — an oud, amber, and wood composition of genuine depth.

Dunhill Desire (2008) remains the house's most commercially consistent performer — a warm amber-sandalwood-tobacco oriental that ages well on skin, developing greater complexity over 4-6 hours. Driven (2019) provides a fresh, modern counterpoint — aquatic, clean, and connecting to the British motoring heritage the brand was built upon. Dunhill for Men (original, 1934) — recreated in various forms across decades — represents the house's historical masculine. Signature Collection fragrances position Dunhill at the upper end of British luxury accessible masculine.

Dunhill occupies accessible luxury — EDTs from €40-€75 — with English heritage and understatement that differentiates it clearly from the more overtly glamorous Italian and French alternatives. The Dunhill customer appreciates quiet confidence over loud announcement — the same values that have distinguished the Jermyn Street shop for 130 years.

Dunhill — Common Questions

When was Dunhill founded?

Alfred Dunhill founded his London business in 1893, initially selling motoring accessories and tobacco before expanding into leather goods and luxury lifestyle. The Mayfair flagship on Jermyn Street opened in 1907. Dunhill entered fragrance in the 1970s. The fragrance programme has been managed through Inter Parfums since 2017, creating modern interpretations of the house's English luxury DNA.

What is Dunhill Desire?

Dunhill Desire (2008) is the house's most globally recognised fragrance — a warm amber-sandalwood-tobacco oriental that represents the Dunhill aesthetic perfectly: sophisticated without shouting, confident without aggression. Its amber-musk base develops beautifully over 4-6 hours on skin, gaining greater complexity and warmth as it settles. For a British brand fragrance at an accessible price, Desire consistently overdelivers in character and longevity.

How does Dunhill compare to Burberry and Bentley in British masculine fragrance?

All three are British luxury brands at comparable price points, but with different character profiles. Burberry is the most globally commercial — Her EDP and Burberry Brit are widely distributed. Dunhill is the most understatedly British — Jermyn Street quality without loud branding. Bentley connects to automotive heritage. Dunhill's Desire competes with Boss Bottled in the warm oriental masculine category, while Driven competes with Burberry's aquatic masculines. For quintessential English understatement, Dunhill leads all three.

Are Dunhill fragrances long-lasting?

Dunhill fragrances, particularly Desire and Century, deliver good longevity — typically 6-10 hours on skin with moderate projection that increases as the amber and wood base notes develop. The British masculine aesthetic of 'enough without excess' means Dunhill fragrances tend toward pleasant sustained presence rather than aggressive sillage.

Can I try Dunhill fragrances as samples?

Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Dunhill samples, miniatures, and tester bottles including Desire, Driven, Century, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide.
