Escentric Molecules

Escentric Molecules was founded in Berlin in 2006 by Geza Schoen, a German perfumer trained at Haarmann & Reimer (now Symrise), who built the brand around a radical single-ingredient concept: each Molecule fragrance contains only one aroma-chemical molecule — Iso E Super (Molecule 01), Ambroxan (Molecule 02), Clearwood (Molecule 03), Javanol sandalwood (Molecule 04), and Cashmeran (Molecule 05). The Escentric versions pair each molecule with a complementary composition. The concept was unprecedented: selling single-molecule fragrances at luxury prices based entirely on the claim that these molecules work through skin chemistry to create a uniquely personal scent — invisible to the wearer, detected by others.

Schoen's insight — that Iso E Super at high concentration creates a woody aura that most people cannot smell on themselves but that others find irresistible — proved commercially prescient. Molecule 01 (2006), using only Iso E Super in a carrier, became one of the most discussed and unusual fragrances in contemporary perfumery: a fragrance that smells of almost nothing to most wearers but creates a magnetic proximity effect that others notice. The fragrance community's fascination with pheromone-like effects made Molecule 01 a viral phenomenon.

Molecule 01 (2006) is the house's most celebrated and purchased composition — a single-molecule IFF specialty that creates an invisible but compelling skin-scent aura. Its popularity reflects the community's interest in pheromone-like attraction effects and the philosophical novelty of a 'fragrance you cannot smell yourself.' Molecule 02 (ambroxan) takes the beloved skin-warmth molecule used in Sauvage and presents it alone. Escentric 01-05 pair each molecule with a supporting composition for those who want more conventional fragrance complexity.

Escentric Molecules occupies accessible niche luxury — EDPs from €70-€120 for 100ml — with a concept genuinely unlike anything else in commercial perfumery.

Every Escentric Molecules fragrance at The Scent Stories® is 100% authentic, factory-sealed and brand-packaged — sourced from authorised channels and shipped worldwide.

Escentric Molecules — Common Questions

Who founded Escentric Molecules?

Escentric Molecules was founded in Berlin in 2006 by German perfumer Geza Schoen, trained at Haarmann & Reimer (now Symrise). His radical concept — selling single aroma-chemical molecule fragrances at luxury prices — was unprecedented. Molecule 01 (Iso E Super alone) became one of the most discussed fragrances in contemporary perfumery for its unusual pheromone-like proximity effect.

What is Molecule 01 and why can't you smell it on yourself?

Molecule 01 contains only Iso E Super — a woody-cedar aroma-chemical — in a carrier. The peculiarity: Iso E Super affects the olfactory receptor OR5AN1 in a way that causes rapid olfactory adaptation — most people stop smelling it on themselves within minutes. But others nearby can smell it clearly, creating a proximity-dependent magnetic aura. This unusual property — invisible to the wearer but noticeable to others — gives it a pheromone-like reputation in the fragrance community.

What is the difference between Molecule and Escentric versions?

The Molecule versions (01, 02, 03, 04, 05) contain only the single featured aroma-chemical molecule in a carrier — no other fragrance ingredients. The Escentric versions pair each molecule with a supporting composition that demonstrates how the molecule behaves when combined with complementary ingredients. For example, Escentric 01 pairs Iso E Super with pink pepper, citrus, and woods. Many buyers use the Escentric version for day wear and layer the Molecule version underneath.

How does Escentric Molecules compare to Initio in molecule-focused niche?

Both Escentric Molecules and Initio Parfums Privés build around specific aroma-chemical molecules and their effects on attraction. Escentric is the more radical — Molecule 01 contains a single ingredient. Initio is the more compositionally sophisticated — Side Effect uses multiple ingredients around ambroxan. Escentric Molecules has the purer philosophical concept; Initio the more conventionally beautiful compositions. For the fragrance purist interested in ingredient science, Escentric is the more challenging and interesting house.

Can I try Escentric Molecules as samples?

Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Escentric Molecules samples and miniatures including Molecule 01, Molecule 02, Escentric 01, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. Molecule 01 in particular is strongly recommended to sample before purchase — its self-smell invisibility means paper testing is useless; in-skin testing in social situations is the only way to experience its actual effect.
