Paco Rabanne

Francisco Rabaneda Cuervo — who adopted the stage name Paco Rabanne — was born in San Sebastián, Spain in 1934 and trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He began his fashion career making costume jewellery for Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Dior before launching his own label in 1966 with a collection of twelve unwearable dresses made entirely of metal mesh and plastic — a provocation that established him as fashion's most radical futurist. His 1 Million bottle — a gold bar — and Lady Million's faceted diamond, are among the most iconic fragrance flacons in commercial perfumery. Rabanne died in February 2023; the house rebranded as simply 'Rabanne' that same year, though its fragrance legacy continues under both names.

The Paco Rabanne fragrance programme operates under Puig Group's direction with perfumers of considerable stature. 1 Million (2008) was created by Christophe Raynaud, Olivier Pescheux, and Michel Girard — a team approach that produced the house's most commercially successful fragrance. Olivier Polge (now Chanel's head perfumer) created Calandre in 1969, Paco Rabanne's first great fragrance — a cold, metallic floral reflecting the house's material obsessions. Nathalie Lorson created Olympéa (2015), the feminine counterpart to 1 Million.

1 Million (2008) is the house's defining commercial achievement — a bold amber-spice-woody composition with blood mandarin, rose, and leather over labdanum, amber, and patchouli. Within three years of launch, it became the world's second bestselling masculine. The gold bar bottle became as iconic as the fragrance. Lady Million (2010), its feminine counterpart (neroli, raspberry, jasmine, honey, patchouli, amber), reached similar commercial heights. Olympéa (2015), a white floral aquatic oriental, became one of the decade's most successful feminine launches. Phantom (2021), using a robotic skull bottle and cashmeran-lavender-woody composition, demonstrated the house's commitment to provocative design.

Paco Rabanne occupies accessible luxury — €70-€110 for mainline EDPs — directly comparable to D&G, Versace, and Boss. The house's unique strength is design provocation: no fragrance house invests as much in the flacon as both artwork and conversation piece.
