Zino Davidoff was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1906, emigrated to Geneva with his family in 1911 when his father Henri established a tobacco shop, and grew up in a world where the finest cigars, pipe tobaccos, and accessories were daily objects of connoisseurship. After an apprenticeship in Havana's tobacco industry, Zino returned to Geneva and transformed his father's shop into what became the world's most celebrated tobacconist. His philosophy — 'Slow down and smoke a Davidoff' — spoke to a lifestyle of unhurried quality. The Davidoff brand, acquired by Oettinger Imex AG and later fragrance rights acquired by Coty, extended into fragrance in 1984, maintaining the same philosophy of accessible quality at the frontier between mass market and prestige.

Cool Water (1988) was created by Pierre Bourdon — one of perfumery's most celebrated minds, also responsible for the influential Kouros Fraîcheur and the original Monocle Scent One: Hinoki. Bourdon built Cool Water around dihydromyrcenol — a synthetic molecule that smells simultaneously of water, fresh air, and clean laundry — combined with lavender, sandalwood, musk, and tobacco. The brief was clear: masculine freshness at an accessible price, for the mass market. The result created not just a bestselling fragrance but an entirely new genre — the aquatic masculine — that has generated billions of dollars in copycat fragrances from virtually every brand in the industry.

Cool Water (1988) has sold over 100 million bottles since launch and remains one of the ten bestselling masculine fragrances in history despite entering its fourth decade. Its influence on the fragrance industry is immeasurable — without Cool Water, there is no Acqua di Giò, no Bleu de Chanel, no Boss Bottled Night, no Sauvage. The 2021 relaunch with 100% natural ingredients represented Coty's commitment to sustainability without altering the beloved original formula. Cool Water Woman (1996) created a parallel aquatic feminine. Davidoff Adventure and The Game extended the house into warmer, woodier masculine territory.

Davidoff occupies accessible luxury at the lower end — EDTs from €30-€60 — making it the most accessible prestige fragrance brand in this guide. Cool Water's cultural significance vastly exceeds its price point; it is one of the handful of fragrances that genuinely changed the course of the industry.

Davidoff — Common Questions

When was Davidoff founded?

Zino Davidoff was born in Kiev in 1906 and emigrated to Geneva in 1911 where his father Henri established a tobacco shop. After training in Havana's tobacco industry, Zino transformed the family business into the world's most celebrated tobacconist. The fragrance programme launched in 1984 under Coty licensing, with the philosophy of 'slow down and enjoy quality' translated from cigars into scent. Cool Water (1988) became one of the most commercially significant fragrances in history.

Who created Cool Water and why is it historically important?

Cool Water (1988) was created by Pierre Bourdon — one of perfumery's most revered minds, also responsible for Kouros Fraîcheur. Bourdon built the composition around dihydromyrcenol — a synthetic molecule smelling simultaneously of water, fresh air, and clean linen — combined with lavender, mint, sandalwood, and tobacco. The result created the aquatic masculine genre from scratch. Without Cool Water, there is no Acqua di Giò, no Bleu de Chanel, no Boss Bottled Night, no Sauvage — the entire fresh masculine category of the past 35 years traces its origin to this single composition.

Is Cool Water still good after 35 years?

Cool Water has been a continuous global top-ten masculine seller for 35 years — a longevity that only a handful of fragrances in history have achieved. The 2021 reformulation maintained the original formula while achieving 100% natural ingredients. The composition remains genuinely excellent: clean, fresh, distinctively maritime without being overtly synthetic. At its accessible price point, it represents one of the finest quality-to-cost ratios in prestige masculine perfumery.

How does Davidoff compare to Hugo Boss and Lacoste in accessible masculine fragrance?

All three occupy the accessible masculine tier at similar price points, with Boss Bottled and Cool Water being the two longest-running bestsellers in the category. Davidoff's aquatic character (Cool Water) differs from Boss's warm apple-spice-cedar (Boss Bottled) — they are genuinely complementary rather than competitive. Lacoste offers fresh sporty character. Cool Water is arguably the most historically significant of the three; Boss Bottled arguably the most versatile for professional use; Lacoste the most casual.

Can I try Davidoff fragrances as samples?

Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Davidoff samples, miniatures, and tester bottles including Cool Water, Cool Water Woman, Davidoff Adventure, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. Cool Water's aquatic character makes it particularly interesting as a comparison sample alongside newer aquatic masculines like Acqua di Giò and Bleu de Chanel — understanding the original that inspired a generation of successors adds meaningful context to exploring any of them.
