Lancôme was founded in Paris in 1935 by Armand Petitjean, a former executive at Coty, who chose the name from a ruined castle near his ancestral home in the Loir-et-Cher valley. His launch at the Brussels World Exhibition featured five fragrances simultaneously — an unprecedented statement of ambition — and a rose as the brand's symbol, establishing the floral identity that remains central 90 years later. L'Oréal Group acquired Lancôme in 1964 and has built it into the world's third-largest luxury beauty brand by revenue. The partnership with L'Oréal gave Lancôme access to the group's extraordinary research infrastructure while maintaining the Parisian luxury identity.

Lancôme's fragrance team has included some of perfumery's most celebrated names. Sophia Grojsman — responsible for Trésor, which remains one of the bestselling fragrances in history — created a rose-iris-white musk composition of extraordinary femininity in 1990. Dominique Ropion, working with Anne Flipo and Olivier Polge, created La Vie est Belle in 2012 — the house's most commercially successful fragrance and one of the most rapidly successful launches in the history of prestige perfumery, reaching global top-five status within a year. The house also created Miracle (2000) with Jean Guichard — a blend of lychee, magnolia, jasmine, and musk that captured early 2000s optimism.

La Vie est Belle (2012) is Lancôme's modern icon: an iris-gourmand of iris, patchouli, vanilla, praline, orange blossom, and jasmine created by Dominique Ropion, Anne Flipo, and Olivier Polge. Julia Roberts became the face, and the fragrance reached global bestseller status within months — one of the fastest commercial perfume launches in history. Its sequel La Vie est Belle en Rose (2021) and La Vie est Belle L'Éclat have extended the franchise into lighter, fresher territories. Trésor (1990) — Sophia Grojsman's rose-iris masterpiece — remains among the world's top-ten feminine bestsellers 35 years after launch. Idôle (2019), an iris-rose-musk by Domitille Michalon-Bertier, is the house's most recent critically successful launch.

Lancôme sits in premium accessible luxury — EDPs from €80-€140 — with brand recognition and quality that position it firmly beside Dior and YSL. Their customer is typically sophisticated but mainstream — someone who appreciates genuine French luxury without the obscurity of niche.

Lancome — Common Questions

When was Lancôme founded?

Lancôme was founded in Paris in 1935 by Armand Petitjean, a former Coty executive, who launched with five fragrances simultaneously at the Brussels World Exhibition — an unprecedented statement of ambition. The name comes from a ruined castle near his ancestral home in the Loir-et-Cher valley; the rose became the brand's symbol. L'Oréal Group acquired Lancôme in 1964 and built it into the world's third-largest luxury beauty brand, now operating across 80 countries.

Who created La Vie est Belle?

La Vie est Belle (2012) was created by three perfumers: Dominique Ropion, Anne Flipo, and Olivier Polge — three of the industry's most respected names working simultaneously on a single composition, an unusual approach that produced one of the most commercially successful fragrance launches in history. The iris-patchouli-vanilla-praline-orange blossom composition, with Julia Roberts as face, reached global top-five status within months of launch — one of the fastest commercial perfume launches ever recorded.

What is Lancôme Trésor and why has it lasted 35 years?

Trésor (1990) was created by Sophia Grojsman — also responsible for White Linen and Eternity for Women — as a rose-iris-peach-vanilla composition of exceptional warmth and femininity. Its sustained 35-year presence in the global top-ten feminine bestsellers reflects genuine compositional quality: Grojsman's signature 'transparent rose' technique creates warmth that feels personal rather than loud. It has been worn at more weddings, christenings, and anniversaries than perhaps any other fragrance of its generation.

How does Lancôme compare to Chanel and Dior in the luxury feminine market?

All three target sophisticated femininity at comparable price points, but with distinct identities. Chanel is the most intellectually selective — the No.5 heritage carries enormous weight. Dior is the most globally marketed — Sauvage and J'adore are heavily advertised. Lancôme is the warmest and most accessible of the three — La Vie est Belle and Trésor reward emotional rather than intellectual engagement. For those new to luxury fragrance, Lancôme often offers the most immediately rewarding experience.

Can I try Lancôme fragrances before buying?

Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Lancôme samples, miniatures, and tester bottles including La Vie est Belle, Trésor, Idôle, Miracle, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. La Vie est Belle in particular has evolved through multiple concentrations and versions — L'Éclat, En Rose, L'Absolu de Parfum — each with meaningfully different character, making sampling across the range valuable before choosing the right interpretation.
