Byredo
Ben Gorham was born in Stockholm in 1976 to an Indian mother and Canadian father, growing up between Stockholm, Toronto, and New York before a career as a professional basketball player was curtailed by injury. He discovered fragrance through a chance encounter with Italian-Japanese perfumer Pierre Wulff and decided to create a fragrance house with no perfumery background but extraordinary aesthetic conviction. Byredo launched in Stockholm in 2006 with its first fragrance, Pulp — a cassis-carrot-cedar composition that immediately attracted the fashion and art world's attention for its unusual, unconventional character. The brand's visual identity — simple bottles, restrained typography, minimal art direction — embodied the Scandinavian design philosophy that would prove influential across the luxury fragrance industry. EQT, Manzana Group, and ultimately Puig Group acquired controlling interest in 2022.
Byredo works with a small group of perfumers including Jerome Epinette (who created Gypsy Water and Bal d'Afrique) and Alexandra Carlin. Jerome Epinette is the house's most important creative collaborator, creating several of Byredo's most celebrated compositions. Gypsy Water (2008) uses bergamot, lemon, pepper, incense, pine needles, sandalwood, and amber to create a composition that smells simultaneously of a pine forest, a bohemian campfire, and Parisian rooftop. Bal d'Afrique (2009) uses bergamot, African marigold, cyclamen, neroli, cedar, vetiver, and musks to capture the spirit of 1920s Paris's African cultural exchange.
Gypsy Water (2008) is Byredo's most celebrated and commercially significant fragrance — a bergamot-pine-incense-sandalwood composition beloved by the fashion world for its simultaneously bohemian and polished character. It has been worn publicly by Beyoncé, Rihanna, and countless fashion editors. Bal d'Afrique (2009) is perhaps the more compositionally sophisticated — its African marigold and bergamot-neroli create something genuinely warm and cross-cultural. Mojave Ghost (2014) — ambrette, magnolia, violet, sandalwood, and ambergris — is the house's most 'skin scent' offering and often recommended as an entry point for those new to Byredo. La Tulipe (2012) and Rose of No Man's Land (2016) are beloved feminines.
Byredo occupies premium niche luxury — EDPs from €160-€220 for 100ml — with a cultural cache in the fashion world that few brands achieve. Their brand identity is so coherent that a Byredo fragrance on a shelf is recognised before it is smelled.
Every Byredo fragrance at The Scent Stories® is 100% authentic, factory-sealed and brand-packaged — sourced from authorised channels and shipped worldwide.
Byredo — Common Questions
Who founded Byredo and when?
Byredo was founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham — born in Stockholm in 1976 to an Indian mother and Canadian father, a former professional basketball player who discovered fragrance through a chance encounter with perfumer Pierre Wulff. He launched Byredo with no formal perfumery training but extraordinary aesthetic conviction, creating a brand whose Scandinavian minimalism has influenced the luxury fragrance industry globally. Puig Group acquired a controlling interest in 2022 following earlier investment from EQT and Manzana Group.
What is Gypsy Water?
Gypsy Water (2008), created by Jerome Epinette, is Byredo's most celebrated fragrance and the composition that established the brand in the fashion world. Its bergamot-pepper-pine-incense-sandalwood-amber structure creates something that smells simultaneously of a pine forest, a bohemian campfire, and Parisian rooftop ambiguity — unconventional without being alienating. Beyoncé and Rihanna have worn it publicly; it remains a permanent reference in the fashion world's fragrance conversation.
What is Mojave Ghost?
Mojave Ghost (2014), created by Jerome Epinette, is Byredo's most skin-like and accessible composition — ambrette, magnolia, violet, sandalwood, and ambergris creating a warm, clean, skin-adjacent warmth inspired by the ghost plant (Graptopetalum paraguayense) that thrives in the Mojave Desert. It is often recommended as the entry point for those new to Byredo: transparent enough to be universally wearable, distinctive enough to be worth owning. Its white-ambrette-sandalwood structure works equally well on all skin chemistries.
How does Byredo compare to Diptyque and Jo Malone in lifestyle niche?
All three are premium lifestyle fragrance houses with strong aesthetic identities, but distinct cultural positioning. Byredo is the most fashion-forward and culturally aggressive — its presence at Paris Fashion Week and association with figures like Beyoncé give it cultural currency beyond fragrance. Diptyque is the most artistically grounded (founded by painters and designers). Jo Malone is the most British and approachable, with the layering system as its unique differentiator. For the fashion-aware buyer, Byredo offers the most social relevance; for the connoisseur, Diptyque the deepest artistic substance.
Can I try Byredo fragrances before buying?
Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Byredo samples and miniatures including Gypsy Water, Mojave Ghost, Bal d'Afrique, La Tulipe, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. Byredo fragrances tend to perform differently on different skin chemistries — Gypsy Water's pine-incense character can read as medicinal on some skins, or magnificently bohemian on others. In-skin sampling is particularly important with Byredo for this reason.
