Serge Lutens

Serge Lutens was born in Lille, France in 1942 — orphaned at birth and raised by his grandmother in a period of post-war austerity that he has described as formative in his obsession with beauty as transformation. He became a hairdresser at fourteen, discovering an extraordinary talent for visual transformation, and by the late 1960s had moved to Paris where his work for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar established him as one of fashion photography's most significant aesthetic forces. His decade-long collaboration with Shiseido Japan (from 1968) as the brand's first Western creative director transformed both his aesthetic and the global understanding of Japanese beauty. He founded Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido in Paris in 1992 — a space that is simultaneously boutique, gallery, and theatrical stage — and launched his own fragrance house in partnership with Shiseido, working with master perfumer Christopher Sheldrake.

Sheldrake — who worked with Lutens from the beginning and has been responsible for the majority of the house's most celebrated compositions — brings a technical mastery to Lutens's intensely visual and literary briefs. Feminité du Bois (1992) is considered by many fragrance historians the first mainstream commercial fragrance built primarily on cedarwood — Lutens and Sheldrake's challenge to the floral hegemony that preceded it. Arabie (2000) — cumin, coriander, orange, rose, amber, musk, and oud — was inspired by the Saharan markets of Marrakech where Lutens maintains his Moroccan home. Ambre Sultan (2000) — amber, rose, labdanum, oregano, basil, and benzoin — created the oriental amber template that subsequent niche houses have referenced.

Feminité du Bois (1992) established the cedar-dominant fragrance as a genuine category. Ambre Sultan (2000) is Lutens's most admired oriental — a rich, complex amber of labdanum, rose, and Moroccan herbs that approaches the quality of Guerlain's Shalimar at a comparable price. Arabie (2000) is the house's most cumin-forward composition — intensely Eastern, aromatic, and challenging in the most rewarding way. Gris Clair (2006) — lavandin, white musk, iris, and incense — is the house's most cleanly contemporary masculine-leaning composition.
