Bottega Veneta was founded in Vicenza, northern Italy in 1966 by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro. The house's founding philosophy — 'when your own initials are enough' — was an early statement against the logo mania that would define luxury in the 1980s-90s: Bottega Veneta's products were distinguished by their intrecciato (woven) leather technique rather than any visible branding. The brand fell into decline in the 1990s before being acquired by Gucci Group (now Kering) in 2001 and relaunched under creative director Tomas Maier, then elevated to new cultural heights by Daniel Lee (2018-2021), whose radical collections made Bottega Veneta the most discussed luxury house of its moment. Their fragrance programme, managed through a partnership with Interparfums, began in 2011.

The original Bottega Veneta EDP (2011) was created by Daniela Andrier — the same perfumer responsible for Prada's Infusion d'Iris and several Chanel Les Exclusifs compositions. Her brief was to capture the essence of the Bottega Veneta leather workshop: the smell of cut leather, fresh suede, and the powdery iris that traditionally accompanies Italian artisanal craftsmanship. The result — a leather-rose-patchouli-iris composition of unusual sophistication — became the house's most critically admired fragrance and one of the finest leather feminines of the 21st century.

The original Bottega Veneta EDP (2011) is the house's masterwork — Daniela Andrier's leather-rose-patchouli-iris creating a composition simultaneously artisanal and modern, with genuine leather accord at concentrations that luxury-priced houses rarely achieve in mainstream EDPs. Knot (2014), a fruity-floral, and Eau Légère (2014) provide lighter counterpoints. Pour Homme (2013), a cedar-leather-herbs composition, is the house's most accomplished masculine.

Bottega Veneta occupies premium accessible luxury — EDPs from €85-€130 — with an Italian artisanal heritage and compositional integrity that consistently outperform houses with more aggressive brand recognition at comparable prices.

Bottega Veneta — Common Questions

When was Bottega Veneta founded?

Bottega Veneta was founded in Vicenza, northern Italy in 1966 with the philosophy 'when your own initials are enough' — distinguishing products through their intrecciato woven leather technique rather than visible branding. Kering acquired the house in 2001. The fragrance programme began in 2011, created by Daniela Andrier — also responsible for Prada's Infusion d'Iris — capturing the leather workshop's artisanal character in scent.

What is the original Bottega Veneta EDP?

The original Bottega Veneta EDP (2011), created by Daniela Andrier, is the house's masterwork — a leather-rose-patchouli-iris composition that captures the smell of the Bottega Veneta leather workshop: cut leather, suede, and powdery iris. It is considered one of the finest leather feminines of the 21st century, with a sophistication that Andrier's Prada Infusion d'Iris shares — minimalist, intellectually demanding, and genuinely beautiful.

Who is Daniela Andrier?

Daniela Andrier is a Swiss-Brazilian perfumer based in Paris who has become one of the most respected in contemporary niche and luxury fragrance. She is responsible for Prada Infusion d'Iris, multiple Chanel Les Exclusifs compositions, and Bottega Veneta's founding EDP. Her compositional style — minimalist structures built around a single high-quality ingredient — aligns with both Bottega Veneta's 'quiet luxury' philosophy and Prada's intellectual approach.

How does Bottega Veneta compare to Salvatore Ferragamo in Italian leather house fragrance?

Both are Italian fashion houses with fragrance programmes centred on leather-craft heritage, but with different approaches. Ferragamo's Signorina is joyful, fruity, and immediately accessible — Italian spring in a bottle. Bottega Veneta's original EDP is deliberately restrained and artisanal — the actual smell of a leather workshop rather than an aspiration toward femininity. For the fragrance connoisseur who appreciates intellectual restraint, Bottega Veneta is the more interesting house.
