Joop

Wolfgang Joop was born in Potsdam, Germany in 1944 and established himself as one of Germany's foremost fashion designers, known for a romantic, baroque aesthetic that stood apart from the minimalism that characterised German design. His fashion house — founded in 1978 — produced clothing celebrated for its theatrical, maximalist luxury, attracting a devoted following among European fashion enthusiasts who appreciated quality without restraint. Joop! (the exclamation mark is intentional) entered fragrance in 1987, with the iconic Joop! Homme (1989) becoming one of the most commercially successful accessible masculine fragrances in European history. Lancaster Group manages the Joop! fragrance licence.

Joop! Homme (1989) — created by Anne Charial and Pierre Wargnye — is among the most important accessible masculine fragrances ever created. Its unusual structure — jasmine, flowers, light woods, amber, and musk layered over a sweet, almost feminine base — was genuinely groundbreaking for 1989: a masculine fragrance that embraced sweetness and florals rather than fougère formulas or woods. The result was divisive and immediately successful, attracting a devoted following for its baroque, decadent character.

Joop! Homme (1989) is the house's masterwork and one of the most influential accessible masculines ever created — its jasmine-amber-musk structure with sweet, almost powdery base challenged masculine fragrance conventions a decade before gourmand masculines became mainstream. Wild (2012) and Jump (2000) provide more conventional fresh-masculine alternatives for those who find Homme's baroque sweetness overwhelming. Joop! (original feminine, 1987) — rose, magnolia, musk — is a classic 1980s romantic feminine.

Joop! occupies accessible prestige — EDTs from €30-€60 — with Joop! Homme's extraordinary compositional audacity (particularly for 1989) representing one of the finest accessible masculine values in fragrance history.
