The Merchant of Venice is an Italian luxury niche fragrance house founded in Venice in 2010, drawing its name and inspiration from Shakespeare's play and the extraordinary role of Venice as a crossroads of Eastern and Western perfumery traditions from the 15th to 18th centuries. Historical Venice — the Serenissima — was the primary port through which Arabian spices, Indian resins, and Eastern aromatics entered European culture: it was through Venetian merchants that musk, oud, ambergris, and saffron first reached European perfumers. The house reconstructs and reimagines these historical fragrance formulas using contemporary perfumery techniques.

The Merchant of Venice works with Italian perfumers who research historical Venetian fragrance recipes from the Doge's archives and the Arsenal's historical documents. Black Oud (2013) — Venetian black oud, amber, and musks — is among the house's most celebrated orientals. Oriental Talc (2013), using iris, sandalwood, and musks, demonstrates the lighter, Italian-elegant side of the portfolio. Gold Collection and Museum Collection provide different tiers of accessibility and exclusivity.

Black Oud (2013) is the house's most discussed composition — a black oud interpretation that channels Venetian trading history through contemporary Italian niche sensibility. Museum Collection Murano Glass (2018) — using sea salt, marine accord, bergamot, and musk — captures the particular quality of light on the Venetian lagoon in one of the most evocative regional fragrances in contemporary niche. Rose Imperial (2015) demonstrates the house's Italian rose tradition.

The Merchant of Venice occupies premium accessible niche — EDPs from €140-€200 — with a genuinely unique geographic and historical proposition that no other house replicates: Venetian trading history as an olfactive framework.

The Merchant of Venice — Common Questions

What is The Merchant of Venice?

The Merchant of Venice is an Italian luxury niche house founded in Venice in 2010, drawing inspiration from Venice's historical role as the primary conduit between Eastern and Western perfumery traditions. Historical Venice was the port through which Arabian spices, Indian resins, and Eastern aromatics — including oud, musk, ambergris, and saffron — first reached European culture. The house reconstructs and reimagines these historical Venetian fragrance traditions using contemporary techniques.

What makes The Merchant of Venice different from other niche houses?

The Merchant of Venice has a genuinely unique geographic and historical proposition: Venice's 15th-18th century role as a crossroads of Eastern and Western aromatics, expressed through Italian craftsmanship and contemporary niche quality. No other commercial fragrance house uses the specific historical Venice trading archive as its primary creative framework — making their compositions genuinely distinct rather than generically 'Italian niche.'

What is their most famous fragrance?

Black Oud (2013) is the house's most discussed composition — a Venetian black oud-amber interpretation that channels trading history through contemporary Italian sensibility. Museum Collection Murano Glass (2018), capturing the light on the Venetian lagoon through sea salt, marine, and musk, has also attracted significant critical attention for its evocative regional specificity.

How does The Merchant of Venice compare to Acqua di Parma in Italian niche?

Both are Italian niche houses with strong geographic identity, but from very different traditions. Acqua di Parma is rooted in Parmese craftsmanship and Sicilian citrus — northern Italian elegance. The Merchant of Venice is rooted in Venetian trading history and Eastern-Western synthesis — the spice routes of the Adriatic. Acqua di Parma's Colonia is 100 years old; The Merchant of Venice draws on traditions 500 years older.

Can I try The Merchant of Venice fragrances as samples?

Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic The Merchant of Venice samples and miniatures. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide.
