Van Cleef & Arpels

Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in Paris in 1906 when Alfred Van Cleef married Estelle Arpels, daughter of a precious stones dealer, and together with her brother Charles Arpels opened their first boutique at 22 Place Vendôme — the most prestigious address in French luxury. The house became famous for creating the Mystery Setting (1933), a revolutionary technique that makes the mount invisible and the gemstones appear to float freely, and for their extraordinary figurative jewellery — fairies, ballet dancers, and woodland creatures set with precious stones that had never been used in jewellery before. Van Cleef & Arpels became the jeweller of Princess Grace of Monaco; their fragrance programme, launched in the 1970s, brings the same fairy-tale quality to scent. The Richemont Group acquired the house in 1999.

Van Cleef & Arpels fragrances are created in partnership with leading perfumers, with the house's visual language of enchantment, nature, and fairy tale consistently informing the olfactive briefs. Féerie (2008), created by Dominique Ropion, is the house's most celebrated feminine — a floral-woody of rose, peony, and sandalwood inspired by the house's iconic Fée Papillon (Butterfly Fairy) brooch. Oriens (2012), by Olivier Cresp, uses lotus, saffron, amber, and musk in a warmer oriental direction. Aqua Solis (2017), by Nathalie Lorson, introduces a lighter aquatic-floral register.
