Amouage was founded in Muscat, Oman in 1983 by His Highness Sayyid Hamad bin Hamad Al Busaidi, a member of the Omani royal family, under the patronage of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The founding vision was extraordinary: to create a modern luxury fragrance house that would rival the great French maisons while drawing on the extraordinary raw material heritage of the Arabian Peninsula — Omani frankincense, Indian oud, Bulgarian rose, and Taifian jasmine. Amouage has been described as 'the gift of kings' — a reference both to its royal origins and to the price point that initially made it available only to heads of state and the global ultra-wealthy. The house is now managed by a professional board while maintaining its royal connection.

Amouage works with some of perfumery's most accomplished talents, typically in long-term creative partnerships. Christopher Chong served as creative director from 2006 to 2016, collaborating with perfumers including Lucas Sieuzac, Cecile Zarokian, and Annick Menardo to create what many consider the house's golden age. The current creative director is Renaud Salmon. Interlude (2012), created by Lucas Sieuzac and Pierre Négrin, is regularly ranked by fragrance critics as one of the finest fragrances ever made: a complex oriental of labdanum, incense, frankincense, sandalwood, and amber with unusual smoky, medicinal top notes that resolve into extraordinary depth. Jubilation XXV (2008), created by Lucas Sieuzac with the Fragrances of the World community, is a rich oriental tribute composition.

Interlude Man (2012) is Amouage's most critically celebrated composition — a labdanum-incense-frankincense-sandalwood-amber masculine that fragrance critics worldwide rank among the finest 20 fragrances of the modern era. Its opening medicinal smokiness (from labdanum and frankincense) is deliberately challenging, resolving over 2-3 hours into extraordinary oriental depth. Jubilation XXV (2008) is a grand oriental of myrrh, labdanum, rose, frankincense, and woods that created the template for the 'oriental tribute' genre. Epic Man (2009), with cardamom, frankincense, guaiac wood, and leather, is beloved for its ancient-desert character. Reflection Man (2007) provides a cleaner, more accessible entry point with lavandin, geranium, and white musks.

Amouage occupies ultra-luxury — EDPs from €250-€450 for 100ml — with ingredient quality, compositional depth, and craft that rival any house in the world at any price. Their Omani frankincense — sourced directly from Boswellia trees in the Dhofar region — is unique in the fragrance world.

Every Amouage fragrance at The Scent Stories® is 100% authentic, factory-sealed and brand-packaged — sourced from authorised channels and shipped worldwide.

Amouage — Common Questions

When was Amouage founded?

Amouage was founded in Muscat, Oman in 1983 by His Highness Sayyid Hamad bin Hamad Al Busaidi under the patronage of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The founding vision — to create a modern luxury fragrance house drawing on Arabian Peninsula raw material heritage — produced fragrances described as 'the gift of kings.' Amouage's Omani frankincense, sourced directly from Boswellia trees in Dhofar, is unique in global perfumery. The house is now managed professionally while maintaining its royal connection.

What makes Interlude Man so significant?

Interlude Man (2012), created by Lucas Sieuzac and Pierre Négrin, is regularly ranked by fragrance critics among the finest 20 fragrances of the modern era. Its achievement is managing extreme compositional complexity — labdanum, incense, frankincense, sandalwood, amber, and unusually challenging medicinal top notes — without losing coherence. The opening is deliberately difficult: smoky, medicinal, almost pharmaceutical. Over 2-3 hours it resolves into extraordinary oriental depth of a kind only the finest raw materials can achieve. It is not immediately pleasant; it is permanently unforgettable.

Who are the perfumers behind Amouage?

Amouage worked extensively with Lucas Sieuzac during the Christopher Chong creative directorship (2006-2016), who created Interlude, Jubilation XXV, Epic, and Lyric — collectively regarded as the house's finest creations. Cecile Zarokian created Bracken and Portrayal. Annick Menardo contributed to several compositions. The current creative director Renaud Salmon works with a new generation of perfumers. The house's historical practice of long creative relationships with specific perfumers has produced a catalog of unusual consistency.

How does Amouage compare to Xerjoff and Creed at the ultra-luxury tier?

All three sit at the summit of luxury niche perfumery. Amouage has the most Arabian heritage — Omani frankincense, oud, and rose give their compositions a Middle Eastern character unavailable elsewhere. Creed has the longest Western tradition (260 years) and the most commercially viral single fragrance (Aventus). Xerjoff has the most Italian opulence — Turin baroque aesthetics in hand-crafted flacons. For the deepest oriental complexity and the most demanding compositional sophistication, Amouage is peerless. Interlude Man is considered by many experts the most complex masculine ever commercially produced.

Can I try Amouage fragrances before buying?

Yes — The Scent Stories® stocks authentic Amouage samples and miniatures including Interlude, Jubilation XXV, Epic, Reflection, and more. All are factory-sealed and brand-packaged, shipped worldwide. Sampling Amouage before purchase is strongly advised — particularly Interlude, whose challenging opening (medicinal, smoky, initially harsh) gives no indication of the extraordinary depth that emerges over 2-3 hours. Amouage fragrances require patience and in-skin time that paper strips or brief encounters cannot capture.
