Givenchy

Hubert James Marcel Taffin de Givenchy was born in Beauvais, France in 1927 and arrived in Paris at seventeen to study at the École des Beaux-Arts before working for Jacques Fath, Piguet, Lelong, and finally Elsa Schiaparelli. He founded his own house in 1952 on the Rue Alfred de Vigny with a concept of ready-to-wear luxury — clothes that could be mixed, matched, and personalised — which was radical in the era of strict haute couture. His friendship with Cristóbal Balenciaga, whom he considered his 'master,' gave his work a structural rigour that distinguished it from all contemporaries. The defining relationship of Givenchy's career was with Audrey Hepburn: he created her costumes in Sabrina (1954), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), and How to Steal a Million (1966), and designed her personal wardrobe for thirty years. Givenchy was acquired by LVMH in 1988; the house today operates under creative director Matthew M. Williams with fragrance managed through LVMH's beauty division.

Givenchy fragrances have attracted significant perfumery talent across their history. Interlude (originally L'Interdit, 1957) was created by Francis Fabron — specifically for Audrey Hepburn, who wore it privately for two years before it was made available commercially. The name L'Interdit reflected Hepburn's reluctance to share 'her' fragrance. Ysatis (1984), created by Dominique Ropion and Raymond Chaillan, became one of the decade's most celebrated orientals. Amarige (1991), by Dominique Ropion, was a bold tuberose-ylang-ylang composition beloved by gardenia enthusiasts. The modern era brought Irresistible (2021), created by Amandine Clerc-Marie, and Gentleman Society (2022), created by Francis Kurkdjian and Aurélien Guichard.

L'Interdit EDP (2018) — the reformulated version created by Dominique Ropion and Anne Flipo — is Givenchy's most critically acclaimed recent feminine: a duality of white florals (gardenia, tuberose, orange blossom) and smoky vetiver over ambrette and amber that captures the complexity of its Audrey Hepburn heritage. Gentleman (1974) was a revolutionary masculine for its time — warm, spiced, and refined. Gentleman Intense (2019) and Gentleman Society (2022) have updated this legacy for contemporary audiences. Irresistible, with its rose-clean-musk signature, has become one of the house's most commercially successful recent launches with Bella Hadid as face.

Givenchy occupies accessible luxury — EDPs from €75-€120 — with a heritage story and brand cachet that rewards the curious buyer willing to look beyond obvious choices. L'Interdit in particular represents exceptional quality for its price, rivalling fragrances costing twice as much.
