Versace

Gianni Versace founded his fashion house in Milan in 1978 with a debut women's collection for Genny, before establishing his own label at Via della Spiga. A Calabrian-born designer of extraordinary instinct, Versace built an empire on the tension between high culture and street glamour — his Medusa-head logo, gold chain motifs, and boldly printed silk were worn by Elton John, Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, and Madonna simultaneously. He was tragically shot outside his Miami mansion on 14 July 1997; his sister Donatella assumed creative control and has maintained the house's maximalist DNA. Capri Holdings acquired Versace in December 2018 for $2.12 billion.

Versace fragrances are created under the direction of Donatella Versace and a team at perfumers including Daphné Bugey and Guillaume Flavigny, with the fragrance portfolio managed in partnership with Euroitalia. The house's olfactive signature mirrors its fashion — bold, unapologetic, and designed to announce a presence rather than whisper. Key raw materials include aquatic accords, sweet musks, amber, and Mediterranean citrus, reflecting the brand's southern Italian heritage and affinity for sunlit glamour.

Four fragrances have defined Versace's commercial fragrance legacy. Eros EDP (2012) — a bold composition of mint, green apple, lemon, tonka bean, geranium, and ambroxan — became one of the bestselling masculine fragrances in history within five years of launch; actor Zac Efron serves as its face. Bright Crystal (2006), created by Olivier Cresp with notes of pomegranate, peony, and magnolia over musk, is Versace's most enduring feminine and has sold over 50 million units globally. Crystal Noir (2004), a dark gardenia-musk oriental, remains a critical favourite for its sophistication relative to price. Dylan Blue Pour Homme (2016), a citrus-woody aquatic, won the FiFi Award for Men's Prestige in 2017.

Versace occupies the accessible luxury segment — mainline EDPs range from €55-€100 for 100ml, making them among the most competitive values in prestige perfumery. They are comparable to Dolce & Gabbana and Jean Paul Gaultier in commercial positioning, but Versace's stronger brand recognition gives their fragrances cultural status that extends beyond the fragrance community.
